The Van Zandt & Spies Society for Prison Proxy Marriage (& More!)

Greetings and Salutations! If you’re among the many individuals who have very good, sound, and legitimate reasons for wanting to marry a person who is in prison, or if you’re a prisoner with worthy reasons for marrying a person who isn’t incarcerated, or if you’re already in such a marriage, or a member of the family of such a marriage, then you’ve come to the right place! We welcome you!

The Nina Van Zandt and August Spies (pronounced “Spees”) Society is a not-for-profit, 501 (c) 3 organization which supports the legitimate marriage rights of inmates and their non-incarcerated fiancees, fiances, and spouses, who we call “outmates.” We also extend our care to families which are affected by the challenges of incarceration. Our organization’s mission is carried out by outmates, inmates, volunteers, and staff who are dedicated to these purposes.

We honor our historical beginnings insofar as our organization’s name references “Proxy Marriage.” Nevertheless, since our early days, our mission has come to encompass so much more. Today, we serve the needs of those who will wed, or have wed, by both proxy as well as by traditional means. In addition, we serve the needs of the families of these marriages.
